Houston Back To School 2013: FREE VACCINATIONS

     T
he Texas Children's Mobile Clinic Program is helping families keep their children's school immunization records current. Each Thursday this August from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., it will offer free vaccinations at the Children's Museum of Houston. The Texas Children's Mobile Clinic "SuperKids" can give inoculations to the first 200 people to arrive on August 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29.

Parents MUST present their child's immunization records to qualify. All children under 18 years of age who require immunizations for admission to schools have the opportunity to receive the free vaccinations. All required school vaccines will be provided except the TB test and FLU shot.

"Immunizations are important for keeping children healthy," says Dr. Sanghamitra Misra, Medical Director of the Texas Children's Mobile Clinic Program. "They protect children from communicable diseases that can have significant morbidity. Vaccination is required for children to enter school and keeping current on vaccinations is required for continuing in school."

The Texas Children's Hospital Mobile Clinic Program provides comprehensive health care for underserved children in the Houston area. The program includes two fully functioning mobile clinics named SuperKids and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. The clinics offer well child exams, ill or urgent care visits, sports or school physicals and immunizations. "The program helps families who are most in need of services," says Dr. Misra. "Services are free of charge and that is important for many families in times when they are uninsured, in between insurances, or in a period when Medicaid or CHIP has lapsed. Often, parents admit that if the mobile clinic was not there, their child would not have received the services they needed."

The free vaccinations are being offered at the Children's Museum of Houston during Thursday Free Family Nights. Kids are welcome to stay and enjoy the museum after getting their shots.
