10th ANNUAL HOUSTON FIRE FEST:  OCTOBER 4

Houston Fire Department, Val Jahnke Training Facility, 8030 Braniff Street, 713-640-0300

FREE ADMISSION. The Houston Fire Fest features spectacular fire and rescue demonstrations with the goal of raising awareness about fire and life safety. Kids and parents are thrilled to watch the firefighters conduct demonstrations including a Tanker Truck Fire, Bus Fire with Extrication, Ladder Truck Aerial Competition and Diesel Tank Fire. THE ORIGINAL GREEK FESTIVAL:  OCTOBER 2, 3, 4 & 5

The 48th Annual Original Greek Festival celebrates Greek culture, cuisine, history and traditions. Families can feast on delicious gyros, grape leaves, spanakopita, baklava and other Greek staples while enjoying live musical and dance performances. There are children's dance programs scheduled on Saturday and Sunday. Kids can also play on the inflatables and mechanical rides at the Athenian Playground. Be prepared to shop for all things Greek including pottery, cookbooks, clothing, jewelry and souvenirs.      

 

36th HOUSTON ITALIAN FESTIVAL:  OCTOBER 9, 10, 11 & 12 
University of St. Thomas Campus, Museum District.

New this year: a Classic Car Show and expanded children's activities in addition to the popular Marionette Puppet Show.  CLICK HERE for the SCHEDULE of CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES
The festival spotlights Italian culture and traditions through live music, dance performances, food and other favorite pastimes. Parents and children can participate in fun activities including bocce and grape stomping. The Children's Stage features "On With the Show" performed by the Carranza Puppets. The Cultural Education Stage offers Italian Language Classes, Cooking Classes and Wine Classes. Guests can sample Italian bites and participate in the Pasta Eating Contest. Kids can also create crafts and enjoy the inflatables and mechanical rides.

 

TEXAS RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL:  WEEKENDS, OCTOBER 11-NOVEMBER 30

Families can travel back in time as the Texas Renaissance Festival opens its 40th season. The interactive theme park embraces different eras including the 16th century. More than 400 actors playing fairies, musicians, pirates and royal court members mingle with guests at this 55-acre theater. The kingdom is filled with jousting, feasting, folklore and artisans including candle makers, blacksmiths and glass blowers demonstrating their crafts.

BAYOU CITY ART FESTIVAL, DOWNTOWN:  OCTOBER 11 & 12

Around City Hall and Hermann Square, Downtown.

About 300 artists from around the United States will showcase their works at the Bayou City Art Festival. The Creative Zone will feature several stations with free interactive children's art projects. The performing arts stage will feature multi-cultural musical and dance entertainment.

 

8th ANNUAL KBR KIDS DAY - WILD ON BUFFALO BAYOU:  OCTOBER 18

Sabine Promenade, 150 Sabine Street between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive 

FREE ADMISSION. Come dressed as your favorite wild animal, reptile or insect and join the Halloween Costume Parade! Families can soak in the great outdoors along the bayou while enjoying musical performances, sports demonstrations, food and drinks. Kids can create a variety of nature-themed crafts at more than 20 activity stations. Other entertainment include a birds of prey show, face painting and balloon artists. 


3rd ANNUAL TOMBALL BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL:  OCTOBER 25

Depot Plaza, 201 South Elm Street, Tomball, 281-351-5484

FREE ADMISSION &  FREE PARKING. Families can enjoy the sounds of banjos and fiddles as Bluegrass bands take over downtown Tomball. A kids' play area and vendors with handmade crafts will also keep children and parents entertained. The 2014 Headliners include The Lone Mountain Band, Brennan Leigh, Bordertown Ramblers, Amber Digby and Randy Lindley. 
 

19th ANNUAL CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL:  NOVEMBER 8 & 9

The Cynthia Woods-Mitchell Pavilion, 2005 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, 281-363-3300

This festival features numerous fun kids' activities including parachute races, bumper boats, sand pits, interactive games and craft booths to make kites, hats, masks and more. Families can enjoy memorable performances on several stages with the festival focus on inspiring performing and visual arts. The 2014 Main Stage performers include The Octonauts and Choo-Choo Soul "With Genevieve!" Junie B. Jones will also take the stage for "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells."
